For over fifty years, the French fashion house Givenchy has been at the forefront of setting new trends in high fashion. Today, Givenchy stands as an international luxury brand renowned for its Haute Couture and ready-to-wear collections for both men and women, as well as its fashion accessories and iconic perfumes. The essence of Givenchy lies in the refinement of haute couture and the quintessential elegance of French style. Since 1988, the brand has been a part of the LVMH group.

The history of Givenchy

Audrey Hepburn, the legendary American film star, once remarked, "Givenchy is far more than a couturier: he creates personalities." Fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy was born in 1927 into a prosperous family in France. At the age of 10, after visiting the World's Fair in Paris, he decided that his future lay in fashion design. By 17, he had graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Paris and began his apprenticeship with Parisian designer Jacques Fath, later working with other notable designers including Elsa Schiaparelli and Christian Dior.

In 1952, Givenchy launched his own couture house in Paris, quickly gaining recognition for his affordable yet chic mix-and-match blouses, skirts, and slacks. He became known for his exquisite embroidered and printed fabrics and his innovative use of accessories. His collections brought a fresh perspective to the world of haute couture, seamlessly blending traditional garments with the modern needs of the sophisticated traveling woman.

In 1953, a pivotal moment unfolded as the young designer crossed paths with Audrey Hepburn, epitomizing his ideal of femininity. Inspired and supported by Hepburn, Givenchy soared to fame by dressing Hollywood movie stars. Another significant event occurred when John F. Kennedy's assassination thrust Givenchy dresses into the global spotlight, as the mourning Kennedy family was attired in Givenchy creations. A trailblazer in numerous aspects, Givenchy was the first to introduce a luxury collection of women's ready-to-wear in 1954, and in 1958, he revolutionized fashion by unveiling short skirts, allowing women to flaunt their knees for the first time since the 1920s. His work, characterized by a blend of elegance, classicism, audacity, and modernity, featured separate skirts and tops, unconventional embroidered and printed fabrics, sleek tubular evening dresses, opulent ball gowns, embellished headbands, graceful shawls, the iconic princess silhouette, sleeveless coats, chic funnel necklines, and signature perfumes. Before launching a new collection, the company often analyzes reviews about Givenchy products to understand customer preferences.

As time progressed, the Givenchy brand diversified its endeavors. 1973 marked a significant milestone as Givenchy ventured into menswear with the launch of the "Gentleman Givenchy" line. Additionally, the brand expanded its global distribution network, reaching numerous countries, particularly in the Far East and the United States.

The makeup line debuted in 1989 with the groundbreaking Le Prisme Visage, a revolutionary four-in-one face powder that laid the foundation for future iconic Givenchy powders. This innovative product exemplified the brand's commitment to combining elegance with cutting-edge technology, cementing Givenchy's status as a leader in the beauty industry.

In 1988, Hubert de Givenchy, confronted with personal financial challenges, made the decision to sell his company to the esteemed LVMH Group, which also owned renowned fashion houses like Dior, Christian Lacroix, Celine, and Kenzo. Fast forward to 1995, Bernard Arnault, the chairman of LVMH, enlisted the famously flamboyant fashion designer John Galliano, celebrated as the best British designer of the year, to rejuvenate Givenchy and propel it into the contemporary era. The appointment of Galliano, dubbed "the turbulent dandy," sent shockwaves through the industry, surprising even the sixty-eight-year-old Givenchy himself, who learned of it from a news release issued by his own press office! Galliano's inaugural collection for Givenchy in 1996 seamlessly blended his extravagant eveningwear with Givenchy's signature elegant restraint. However, in a surprising turn of events, Galliano abruptly switched to Dior in October 1996, assuming the vacant position left by Gianfranco Ferre.

Nicolas Degennes joined Givenchy as Artistic Director for color and makeup in 1999, making a significant impact on the beauty line in 2013. Inspired by Givenchy's avant-garde runway aesthetics, Degennes introduced the Couture Line, featuring some of the most iconic formulas in the luxury beauty world, including the Le Rouge lipstick and Teint Couture foundation.

In a major shift in 1996, avant-garde designer Alexander McQueen succeeded John Galliano as head designer following Galliano's move to Dior. This transition marked a new chapter for Givenchy, which continued to evolve under new creative leadership.

The millennium brought further changes for Givenchy, with Julien Macdonald taking the reins from McQueen in 2001. The fashion show unveiled the new products of Givenchy, captivating the audience with their innovative designs. In 2017, Clare Waight Keller became the house's first-ever female creative head. During her tenure, Givenchy designed Meghan Markle's wedding dress, which garnered international acclaim.

In 2018, the fashion world mourned the loss of Hubert de Givenchy, the revolutionary and iconic founder, who passed away peacefully in Paris at the age of 91.

In June 2020, Californian-born Matthew M. Williams was appointed as the creative director for Givenchy’s women’s and men’s collections. A self-taught designer, Williams is known for his ability to translate cultural trends into high fashion. His vision promises to continue shaping Givenchy's legacy in exciting and innovative ways.

But that isn’t the only recent change for Givenchy. In 2022, Thom Walker was announced as the Makeup Creative Director, and there is much anticipation to see the new direction Givenchy’s makeup lines will take under his leadership.

As we conclude our journey through Givenchy's illustrious history, let's look ahead to what the future holds. The brand plans to open over twenty boutiques annually worldwide, with a focus on expanding in the United States, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. Moreover, Givenchy has committed to ten resolutions to be achieved by 2025, including attaining 100% traceability of all natural ingredients and promoting a more eco-conscious approach across their products and the entire fashion house. The future looks promising as Givenchy continues to innovate and adapt to contemporary demands while honoring its rich heritage. The fashion show highlighted the latest Givenchy novelties, stunning the audience with their creativity and elegance.

Givenchy Perfumes

In 1972, Givenchy made its foray into the world of fragrances with the introduction of Eau Torride, a revitalizing scent designed for both women and men. Two years later, in 1974, Givenchy unveiled Gentleman, a sophisticated fragrance tailor-made for the confident modern man. This timeless scent was reintroduced in 2002, retaining its allure and charm. Following in the footsteps of classic Givenchy elegance, the latest addition to the fragrance lineup, Givenchy Pour Homme Blue Label, pays homage to the essence of a traditional gentleman while reimagining it for the contemporary man of action. Blue Label exudes the energy, style, and attitude emblematic of today's man, transitioning seamlessly from moments of relaxation to thrilling adventures. With a demeanor that is cool and sophisticated, and a style that is laid-back yet refined, the modern man finds his perfect match in Blue Label.

Another iconic fragrance from the house of Givenchy is Amarige, introduced in 1992 as a captivating oriental scent designed exclusively for women. The Amarige woman is fiercely passionate, fiery, and unapologetically herself – a force to be reckoned with. With its exotic and fruity notes, Amarige exudes a seductive allure that captivates the senses. Anyone who embraces this fragrance embodies the spirit of a vamp, exuding confidence and allure with every drop of Amarige.

Very Irresistible Givenchy seamlessly blends the timeless elegance of French style with the vibrant energy and pop-culture allure of American cinema, paying homage to Givenchy's illustrious beginnings when the worlds of fashion and film were intricately linked. Infused with the enchanting essence of roses and accented with notes of star anise and verbena leaf, Very Irresistible Givenchy represents a refreshing departure from conventional floral fragrances.

Each fragrance from Givenchy's collection has enjoyed remarkable success both in its era and beyond. Like a rare couture gown meticulously crafted to perfection, these perfumes stand as original and artful creations, each possessing its own distinct character and allure that transcends time. From perfumes to haute couture, all Givenchy products embody the brand's commitment to excellence and style.
